Julissa Martinez

Julissa joined the McNair Scholars Institute in the Spring of 2022. The McNair Scholars Institute assists and encourages undergraduate students who are members of underrepresented groups as they pursue doctoral studies. She took workshops on graduate school and received assistance with graduate school applications, including application fee waivers and reductions in the Graduate Record Examination fees. Most importantly, as a member of the McNair Scholars Institute, Julissa was eligible to participate in the Summer Research Institute. Being paid to conduct research for the whole summer was an eye-opening experience for her because of the independence and responsibility required. She developed her statistical skills by problem-solving in R, her writing skills by writing an APA-format research paper, and her communication skills by creating and presenting a conference poster.
